Best Trees to Plant in Utah
What are the Best Trees to Plant in Utah?
My gut reaction is to say fruit trees because they look very nice in the Springtime and are practical (they produce fruit). However, I know that there are many people that would argue that point with me so I did some research on the subject. After looking around I’ve figured out the best trees to plant in Utah are…
Functionality
I start off with the functionality aspect of the tree you’re looking to plant. Being a male I approach situations and problems from a very “I have to fix this” type of mindset. So naturally, I’m trying to figure out what problem you’re trying to solve by purchasing a tree. Are you wanting shade? Do you want fruit? Are you wanting a wind break? Do you need privacy? Based off of your response there’s a myriad of answers, most of which are pretty straightforward. If you’re wanting shade then large pine trees are going to be great for you, like the Colorado Blue Spruce. If you want fruit I personally like pear and crabapple trees. For wind breaks some nice large trees are the Austrian Pine or the Honey Locust. Bristlecone Pine and Pinyon Pine are wonderful for providing privacy.
Size
Size is always a factor since none of us have all of the space that we need (or want). When figuring out what tree or how many of a tree you want you have to adequately size up your yard. Once you know approximately where you’d like the trees, try to imagine if you’d rather have multiple smaller trees or fewer larger trees. In Conclusion
The best trees to plant in Utah are truly in the eye of the beholder. My coworker loves the Austrian Pine for its beautiful layered look, whereas I prefer a more full Colorado Blue Spruce. My wife likes crabapple trees because our kids can climb in it and we can have a picnic under its shade. At the end of the day, it’s really up to you and your wants that will determine what tree is best for you.
